What is a Pediatric Surgeon Pediatric surgeons are primarily concerned with the diagnosis, pre-operative, operative, and postoperative management of surgical problems in children, from the neonatal period through the teenage years. This includes the prenatal diagnosis and management of some birth defects, the emergent surgical care of birth defects that are incompatible with life if unrepaired, management of malignant tumors of childhood, management of traumatic injuries in children, reconstructive surgery of malformations, and management of many common surgical problems of childhood including hernias and appendicitis. Most pediatric surgeons today are also trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery, commonly used in many surgical conditions in children. Pediatric surgeons usually practice their specialty in childrens hospitals in association with other pediatric specialists who are also wholly devoted to the care of children. The training of a pediatric surgeon following graduation from an accredited medical school includes 5 years of graduate surgical education in an approved general surgery residency program, 2 more years of fellowship training in an approved pediatric surgery training program, and the passing of written and oral examinations for certification in both general and pediatric surgery. |
